Engineering expertise, pilot tests, contract manufacturing

Chemspec Europe: Hot topics at the Glatt booth

Engineering specialist Glatt Ingenieurtechnik from Weimar, Germany, is very satisfied with the results of the 32nd International Fair for Fine and Specialty Chemicals 2017. With the help of Augmented Reality, the company provided insights into the process chambers of fluidized bed and spouted bed equipment, and presented APPtec its new spray calcination method for powder synthesis. This new technology allows producing high-performance powders such as effect pigments for the coatings industry, cathode material for fuel cells or optoceramics for lenses and detectors.
Detergent additives, fertilizers, lacquer components and powders with very special properties dominated the discussions at Glatt’s booth. The Weimar-based engineering specialists not only plan and implement fluidized bed systems and entire factories, they foremost develop processes for tailor-made products and specific applications together with their customers. Strong demand for testing capacities highlighted how much clients appreciate Glatt’s support and know-how in this field. At the company’s Technology Center, powders and liquids are spray granulated, spray agglomerated, encapsulated or coated with a functional spray coating using the smallest and most flexible mobile laboratory in the world. Scale-up in production scale can then be done on an on-site pilot plant. Several visitors showed great interest in buying or renting the laboratory system which enables both fluidized bed and spouted bed processes.
Glatt’s on-stand innovations also attracted a lot of attention: Glatt’s next-generation technology APPtec (Advanced Pulse Powder technology), an advancement of powder synthesis based on spray calcination. Hereby, high-performance materials such as homogeneous catalytic powders or high-performance pigments can be synthesized. The resulting particles deliver completely new properties, complex stoichiometries and application-specific doping. Instead of rare earths or precious metals, mixed oxide systems can be used. Compared with the functionalization and refinement of existing powders or fluids using fluid bed technology, APPtec offers the customer-specific development of completely new high-performance materials. The significant number of enquiries about Glatt’s contract manufacturing capacities via its network of connected production companies demonstrated the ongoing demand for tailor-made particles – especially for food ingredients, animal feedstuffs or components for bulk and fine chemicals.

Company information

Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH
Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH
Glatt is specialized in intelligent particle design for the generation and functionalization of powders and granulates with defined, adjustable properties. The focus is on particles and powders for pigments, catalytic, ceramic or battery materials as well as for granules and pellets as additives for e.g. industrial salts, detergents and cleaning agents, fertilizers, pesticides, food, feed, dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals. Encapsulation of flavors, enzymes, vitamins, microorganisms, probiotics or fatty acids (PUFA) is just as possible as encapsulation of essential oils and other active, sensitive substances to be protected. With Glatt APPtec®, a unique technology for spray calcination, it is possible to generate, coat and then calcine particles in a pulsing hot gas stream in a single process step. As a pioneer in fluid bed and spouted bed technologies, Glatt masters these important processes for the formulation and optimization of particle properties through defined spray agglomeration, spray granulation, spray coating or (micro)encapsulation as well as through combinations of these processes. Also in the high temperature range. Glatt supports the product idea from the early phase of product formulation through process development to scale-up to production scale. Under the leadership of the Glatt Process & Plant Engineering teams, customized production plants for nutrition, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biotech applications are successfully planned and commissioned. Worldwide. Whether based on powder synthesis, fluid bed or spouted bed technology, Glatt also offers certified contract manufacturing for customers without their own production capacities.

APPtec revolutionizes particle design for future materials
New microsite goes live Glatt has launched a new internet platform that explains how its latest technology offers virtually limitless possibilities for developing tailor-made high-performance powders. On the new microsite, Glatt presents its revolutionary thermal process for powder synthesis, APPtec. The abbreviation APPtec stands for Advanced Pulse Powder technology by Glatt, which represents a groundbreaking development in spray calcination. In the hot gas reactor, primary particles can be equipped with almost unlimited adjustable chemical and mineralogical compositions and with previously unattainable properties. In a single process step, size, particle structure and surface can be individually defined and implemented. For instance, functional core-shell particles can be given application-specific layer thickness, porosity and activity.
