Vibration screening machines: versatile and highly effective
The advantages of the vibration screening machine JEL Konti II are the Hygienic Design, an easy handling and a fast screen change. Vibration screening machines are suitable for a wide range of bulk solids and screening tasks. This is mainly due to the various adjustment options: The key parameters such as screen inclination, vibration motor tilt angle and vibration motor imbalance can be quickly and easily adjusted to the specific screening task and can also be documented. Despite the relatively low amplitudes, vibration screening machines achieve high accelerations which reduce stuck particles and guarantee outstanding screening performance. Laterally arranged vibration motors, as with the JEL Konti II, allow for very compact screening machines with a low installation height which can be easily integrated into tight conditions. Additionally, the vibration screening machine JEL Konti II is popular for its Hygienic Design, easy handling and extremely fast screen change. In our latest product video you can explore how the handling works in detail and what the further advantages of this screening machine are.

Secure relevant powder test values
Many issues that arise in the performance of bulk handling plants relate to the condition of the material and disputes centre on the party responsible. By Lyn Bates, Ajax, Bolton, UK A key factor is whether the unacceptable material condition is the result of the supply being outside the range defined in the contract specification , or is a result of changes taking place during the handling processes. Various properties of the material must be known or assumed with a high degree of confidence for design purposes and a responsible supplier would be assured of these values before proceeding to manufacture, either by experience, or testing ‘representative’ samples in the case of any uncertainty. The following steps are recommended to secure and record the essential details. 1. Have clear reasons for conduction of the tests, to make sure that the tests conducted are necessary and relevant to the purpose of interest. 2. Identify and record the true source and history of powder sample(s) for testing. Secure an authorised and dated signature by a responsible person to verify that it is, Or they are), fully ’Representative’ sample’ of

Moisture monitoring of sugar for quality assurance
By measuring the moisture content of sugar to be added to lollipops, the final product now has a consistent quality. Our customer in the food industry produces sweets, such as lollipops. In the production of lollipops, the taste and aroma of the candy are highly connected to the sugar quantities used in the recipe and applied to the product’s surface as a special final touch. Controlling the amount of sugar applied to the lollipops by ensuring the sugar’s correct moisture content presented a challenge for our customer. When the moisture content is very low, consequently not enough sugar is attached to the lollipops as it is unable to stick. If there is too much moisture in the sugar, it will create lumps and small crystals on the lollipops. Too much or too little sugar leads to a reduction and inconsistency in the final product. Process data: * Customer: Confectionery plant * Material: Refined sugar * Installation: Screw conveyor * Function: Moisture control to meet specification limits Solution: The moisture control was the key point to allow the customer to keep

EIRICH mixing technology for refractory mixes in Taiwan
A refractory company in Taiwan decides to use mixing technology from EIRICH for the preparation of unshaped refractory mixes. There are a large number of companies worldwide that manufacture refractory products and offer kiln linings, e.g. for the production of aluminum, iron and steel, glass, ceramics or cement. Standards distinguish between "shaped products" (bricks) and "unshaped products" (which include castables and also ramming mixes or plastic mixes). Brick production has been steadily declining for decades, while unshaped refractory mixes production is on the rise. And the mixes are becoming more and more demanding. For the preparation of dry mixes based on alumina as well as magnesia, Hsin Lian Hsin Enterprise Co., Ltd, Taiwan, has chosen the best available mixing technology - EIRICH. While refractory bricks go a long way in production (mixing, shaping, heat treatment), unshaped mixes are ready for shipment after mixing. Mixers for the refractory industry must, on the one hand, mix well, and on the other hand, cope with hard raw materials (such as corundum or silicon carbide)

Can you pneumatically convey rice grains? Yes, you can
Dense phase conveying systems for transporting dry rice to filling lines fully preserve the quality of the fragile rice grains and increase the overall process safety and reliability. Gericke has designed and delivered several dense phase conveying systems for transporting dry rice to filling lines. These systems fully preserve the quality of the fragile rice grains and increase the overall process safety and reliability. For a major food producer Gericke had the challenge to replace mechanical transport systems with pneumatic conveying systems. The goal was to prevent any foreign bodies often associated with mechanical systems and at the same time not to change the grain sizes of the various rice types for example long grain, basmati and risotto rice. During the evaluation phase Gericke demonstrated conveying trials that replicated the clients process at its major test facility in Regensdorf (Switzerland) that a low velocity dense phase plug conveying system is perfectly suited to smoothly convey rice over distances of up to 70 m. The achieved product quality convinced the customer as well as the fact that no external air injection system was

Elevator bucket venting, when & why
Lightweight, fluffy materials can be difficult to handle in bucket elevators at high speeds. Venting an elevator bucket aids in bucket fill and discharge. Venting an elevator bucket aids in bucket fill and discharge with light, fluffy materials. Lightweight, fluffy materials, and those that are extremely dense or flow poorly can be difficult to handle in bucket elevators at high speeds. Higher filling of buckets Because these materials tend to trap air when being handled by an elevator bucket, it is necessary to provide air relief to assist in their filling and discharge. Materials in this category might be various flours, meals, feed mash or screenings. As these materials enter the bucket, air is released through a series of vent holes in the bottom of the bucket allowing for a more complete fill. These vent holes also allow air to re-enter the bucket, which facilitates full release of product into the discharge. Standard hole diameter is equal to the size of the bolt mounting holes. Anything different is considered a custom vent. Also for dense materials A venting bucket can improve the efficiency of some bucket

Cost savings through elevator overhaul
Spaansen Bouwsystemen in Harlingen has achieved significant cost savings with a complete elevator overhaul. Processing is more efficient and long lasting, durable components are used. Spaansen Bouwsystemen in Harlingen produces precast concrete structures. An essential conveyor in the production process is the belt elevator, which processes raw materials such as sand and gravel to the concrete mix plant. An extensive inspection by the Muller Beltex team revealed that this elevator was not sufficiently reliable. Over time, the abrasive minerals had caused a lot of wear and fouling, which meant that the continuity of providing the plant with raw materials could no longer be guaranteed. Return pulley The investigation learned that both the drive pulley and the return pulley had to be replaced. This operation has been carried out not just substituting components but by implementing notable improvements, increasing the durability of the elevator. The return pulley (lower drum) has been replaced by an open wing pulley with cone in the middle. Because of the wings and cone, product getting stuck between the elevator belt and the pulley is better taken

Case Study: Fast, paperless asset safety inspections
A very large chemicals processer increased the efficiency of asset safety inspections with inspection templates and automated reporting using reliable Unitags and SafeTrak software from Scafftag. Challenge: Easily manage thousands of asset inspections A large chemical processing plant was keeping track of asset inspections on paper. With thousands of ladders, handrails and floor gratings on the list of assets that need regular safety inspection, the paper trail became exceedingly complex and time intensive to manage. The plant was already using Unitag to communicate which assets were inspected, and deemed safe, or out of use. To keep employees safe and the facility compliant in an efficient way, a solution was needed to replace time-consuming handwritten inspection reports. Solution: A digital asset inspection trail Scafftag proposed the SafeTrak software to replace the entire inspection paper trail with an online tool. All assets that need inspection can be set up in SafeTrak to make inspection planning and follow-up a lot more practical. Asset inspections can be planned at regular intervals, and to each type of asset a standard or custom inspection

Multi-stage thermal treatment sterilizes product
Dinnissen Process Technology has developed an extremely effective thermal treatment for feed, pet food and food: the thermidor-System. It reduces the population of microbes by 99.999%. Multi-stage thermal treatment solution Preventing contamination (e.g. Salmonella) is of utmost importance when processing feed, pet food and food. A few years ago Dinnissen Process Technology introduced their Thermidor-system: a multi-stage thermal treatment solution, as the most effective way to sterilize product while maintaining product homogeneity. It reduces the population of microbes by 99.999%. Not using acids and chemicals Today, most producers prefer this thermal treatment by steam injection over liquid treatments with acids and chemicals. The main reason for this is that chemical treatments leave traces of chemicals (e.g. chlorine with it specific smell) in the product. Additionally, these liquids can change the structure of the product and lead to segregation of the product. Steam injection The Thermidor-system ensures that product composition remains perfectly homogeneous after cooling, heating and drying. This way producers can guarantee their

Fritsch laboratory mills suitable for size reduction of latex products
Fritsch laboratory mills are suitable for size reduction of latex products, so further analyses can be done, for example for the use of solvents and toxic substances. Latex, the milk-like plant sap of the tropical rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), was already brought to Europe from America 500 years ago. A special property of latex is its extraordinary elasticity, which cannot be matched by any synthetic product. Protective gloves made of latex are used in the food industry, hairdressing and by cleaners. However, latex gloves can cause allergies in frequent users. To prevent allergic reactions, latex products were comminuted for further analysis in the Variable Speed Rotor Mill Pulverisette 14 premium line. Variable Speed Rotor Mill Pulverisette 14 premium line For the test, the Pulverisette 14 premium line with the cutting rotor was used. To ensure a better air flow during the comminution process, the small volume Cyclone separator was connected. The mill was operated at a speed of 20,000 rpm. The latex products were manually pre-shredded down to a feed size of 1 cm. Second step The next step was to place the pre-crushed

InlineSENS: density measuring cell with low energy gamma radiation
Berthold Technologies introduces the InlineSENS, a measuring cell with low energy gamma radiation for very precise measurements of density of powders, pastes and sludges The InlineSENS (LB 4700-5x-…) combines both a radiation source and scintillation detector in one device. Its use of low-energy gamma radiation from an Am-241 or Cm-244 source provides for strong responses to even the slightest change in product composition, with extremely low dose rates. The isotope Am-241 or Cm-244 is used as the radiation source. The advantage: Am-241 and Cm-244 have very low radiation energies, which correspond approximately to the energy of X-rays. The density measuring system InlineSENS offers high statistical accuracy and long-term stability by using a highly sensitive scintillation detector with patented drift compensation. The measuring system, which is made entirely of stainless steel, is permanently flanged to the pipeline and continuously measures the product density of liquids, suspensions, slurries, and bulk solids. In the case of the Am-241 version, the product pipe can also be supplied with a liner of Teflon (PTFE) or rubber if

Improving the separation of PET plastics from wash water for PFR Nord
PFR Nord improves the throughput of PET plastics with the Finex Separator™ which is designed for the accurate grading of materials, and improved contamination removal. With a product line stemming from the local German returnable bottle system, PFR Nord recycles PET from beverage bottles. The company is one which prides itself on its efficient process, and its plant has been designed to ensure its processing lines are recycling plastics as effectively as possible. PFR Nord sought a more sustainable processing solution to replace a competitor’s sieving machine. It was needed to pre-separate solids from the wash water as part of its bottle washing line within its final separation process, done by washing shredded plastic on the sieve mesh. The Finex Separator™ was chosen as the ideal unit, due to its abilities to process high throughput rate of product, and accurately grade plastics on up to 5 mesh frames. Once it passed a successful trial and was installed on site, this vibratory separator provided higher throughput rates than the previous machine, easily reaching the required throughput of 35m³/h through a 200μm mesh

Moisture measurement of wood chips
The determination of moisture in dry fibrous material is important to keep the boiler efficiency constant. The determination of moisture in dry fibrous material is important to keep the boiler efficiency constant. Especially in summer, when the wood chip stockpiles are moistened, the water concentration can vary drastically. The Berthold LB 568 analyser provides an online and real-time moisture measurement of digester-fed wood chips. The LB 568 generates multiple microwaves in a wide frequency range, emitted by an antenna below the conveyor. The microwaves penetrate the wood chips and are received by a second antenna above the belt. When penetrating the wood chips, the microwave signal‘s characteristics change in terms of attenuation and phase shift. These changes directly correlate to the wood chip moisture. Variations in layer thickness and bulk density are compensated with the use of a radiometric bulk density compensation system component. The complete system thus provides a stable and reliable moisture reading. The microwave moisture analysers are installed at the

Moisture measurement of gypsum
Continuous moisture measurement of gypsum from quarries allows product distribution in the storage silo to be optimized according to moisture content. Microwave technology The Micro-Polar moisture meter provides online measurement of the moisture content of gypsum transported by a conveyor belt to the intermediary storage before the kiln. Using microwave technology, a non-contacting measurement is made through the entire product height. This allows a representative online measurement even if the product on the belt comes from a mixture of different storage areas with different humidity levels. Online measurement for quality improvement Microwave measurement is non-contacting; no sensor comes into contact with the product to be measured, which limits maintenance and avoids special cleaning. The measurement is not influenced by the colour or inhomogeneity of the measured product. Furthermore, the measurement is carried out on the entire product profile while traditional measurements only measure the surface of the material profile. In addition, the multi-frequency technique and the reference line enhance the

Always keep a close eye on media flows
Reliable control of all connections at a hose couplings station Automatically control of internal media flows and the visualization with the PLC is the order of the day. This smart way of process control is realized by the intelligent couplings-system from MOLLET with the brand name MOLOScode. Each hose gets a transponder and any pipe connection is equipped with a reading device that deliver via bus-system the data about any single coupling point directly to the PLC. Only if the foreseen pairing corresponds to the reality, the production process continues to run undisturbed. A mix-up of the coupling point caused by human error in case of connecting and re-routing of connections can be safely avoided. The complete on-site production process can be showed in the control room and thereby allows a seamless documentation and traceability. Any common couplings-system can be equipped or retrofitted with the MOLOScode-System.
