Drying process harbours high hazard potential
Due to the process, belt dryers are at high risk. Each of the following risk factors is a major fire hazard in itself. In combination, however, they exacerbate them or even ”fuel” each other.
- High drying temperatures: up to over 120 °C.
- High material residence times: over 30 minutes.
- Low residual moisture: up to 3 % possible, depending on the material.
- Sparks or embers can be introduced from upstream and downstream processes.
- High dust loads: smouldering fires can occur in the deposits.
Due to the high fire loads, undetected smouldering fires spread extremely quickly. Without a professional extinguishing system, this usually leads to total loss.
Conventional protection is insufficient
The conventional fire protection systems used up to now do not offer sufficient protection for the complex problem. They are either too sluggish or only effective at certain points: sprinkler and water spray extinguishing systems extinguish a fire in the dryer, but detect it too late. A spark extinguishing system, on the other hand, detects by far the fastest of all systems. It protects against sparks in the infeed and discharge - but does not extinguish a fire in the dryer.
Reliable prevention and lightning-fast extinguishing in an emergency are, however, decisive for the availability and maintenance of the drying plant.
The protection concept of T&B electronic includes a water spray extinguishing system according to VdS 2109 and the control by a spark extinguishing system according to VdS 2106 as an add-on for faster detection. The direct control of the alarm valve station via the spark detection centre is patented.
