Case study: no-entry silo cleaning for soybean storage operator

A leading company in the food industry from Europe presented our BUCHEN-ICS team from Rotterdam with a persistent challenge in their soybean storage facility in South Holland.

1500 m³ of beans stuck

Over the past few years, the operation has been struggling with continuous blockage issues in its soybean silo, where approximately 1500 m³ of beans remained immobile despite numerous attempts at solutions. This blockade significantly affected operational processes and had a negative impact on productivity and profitability.
When our team took on this project, it was estimated that the silo had reached a blockage level of 100% over several years. Our experts recognized the urgency and complexity of the challenge and were determined to find a solution using the best possible method.

The technologies BinDrill and Cardox

Over several shifts, the BinDrill technology was used to carefully drill through the compressed soybeans from the top of the silo. This process aimed to create passages within the blockade and loosen the material.
Now we employed the powerful Cardox system. This technology rapidly releases liquid carbon dioxide (CO2), breaking down the blocked material into smaller particles within seconds.
The combination of BinDrill and Cardox proved to be an unbeatable solution to the customer’s blocking problem.

Full capacity after a few days work

The result? After a several days of precise work, the silo was finally freed from its blockade. The customer expressed great satisfaction as their facility finally regained its full capacity.

No dangerous silo entry

It is particularly important to note that no personnel had to enter the silo during cleaning. The installation of all equipment was done outside the silo. Access to the silo was facilitated through existing hatches or specially installed access points. When applying our BinDrill and Cardox technologies, no scaffolding or other temporary access methods are required, as all work can be completed by us entirely from the outside.

Blocked silos? We let your bulk flow. With our mobile silo cleaning systems - without entry. BUCHEN-ICS is one of the leading international providers of catalyst handling, silo cleaning, as well as chemical cleaning and decontamination. The silo cleaning service provided by BUCHEN-ICS is a highly specialized service for contaminated and clogged bulk material containers, which is performed without the need for personnel entry. Regardless of the type of bulk material - whether it’s coal, fertilizer, gypsum, cement, grain, animal feed, salt, or clay - it eventually accumulates on the container walls or clumps together. This contamination affects the container and reduces material flow and available storage capacity. Using the mobile silo cleaning systems BinDrill®, BinWhip®, and Cardox®, BUCHEN experts eliminate any form of contamination in silos up to 45 meters deep, without having to enter the containers and without potentially contaminating the bulk material. The cleaning equipment for mobile silo cleaning is antistatic, spark-proof, and meets even the strict safety standards and hygiene regulations of the chemical and food industries. The modular design of the equipment allows for quick installation on the container and adaptation to individual container sizes. Personnel entry into the silo is never necessary during the cleaning. At BUCHEN-ICS, you benefit from state-of-the-art technologies and our 45 years of experience in turnaround and projects.
