Glossary of Terms in Powder and Bulk Technology

An explanation of terms relating to particle technology as an introductory tool for non-specialists, newcomers and students in the field.
Bulk solids play a vital role in human society, permeating almost all industrial activities and dominating many. Bulk technology embraces many disciplines, yet does not fall within the domain of a specific professional activity such as mechanical or chemical engineering.

The British Materials Handling Board perceived the need for a Glossary of Terms in Particle Technology as an introductory tool for non-specialists, newcomers and students in this subject.

The glossary was prepared by Lyn Bates for The British Materials Handling Board (BMHB). It contains an Introduction, with 3 paragraphs: Bulk solids in industry; Rand Reports on the performance of plants that handle bulk solids; and General terms.

Sections of terms

Then term in the glossary are grouped in the following sections: Types of Powder, Powder Properties, Powder Processing, Particle Properties, Particle Size, Particle Shape, Pore Size and Shape, Particle Surface Area, Particle Test Methods (of Image Analysis), Particle Test Methods (Others), Bulk Properties and Test Methods, Risk Phrases used in EU countries, Bulk Flow and Pneumatic Conveying.

As appendices are incorportated: a Rand Reports Summary; Gravity Flow Stresses; Relevant Standards and a reference to Andrew Jenike.
